Facebook ads work! OK, one worked on me. I don’t remember exactly what it said, but it was something along the line of “The Dreadnoughts live at Amigos in Saskatoon”. The ad took me to the event page, and that linked me to The Dreadnoughts MySpace. I liked those songs enough to convince some friends to check out the show with me.
The show was great. I have never heard anyone call music fiddle punk until
Joey tweeted it after leaving early from a concert (
he did not like the fiddle punk). And fiddle punk is a good description of The Dreadnoughts. They sound like a harder, more punk version of Dropkick Murphys. Right up my alley. Each person was like a small tornado on stage and all of the songs were good. A pleasant surprise for a band that I had only heard of that week.
It turned out that The Dreadnoughts were opening for another band on their label, The Brains. Their drum said that they were Canadian Psychobilly, which I correctly guessed would be a punk-er rockabilly. The Brains had a great set up: zombie makeup, a horror movie font on their backdrop, and a stand up bass shaped like a coffin.
It was my first time at Amigos and it did not disappoint. It was small, but not packed, had cheap cover ($8), good service, and tasty nachos. The crowd was mostly rockabilly types there to see The Brains. Even though the stage was low and the dance floor was directly in front of our table I never had trouble seeing. Andrew W. K. is there later in June, hopefully the venue will be just as good.
